Catford & Cyphers Vs LESSA (Footscray) 18.05.2003

LESSA isn't more as Galvin spins Cyphers to victory

Catford & Cyphers Sunday XI enjoyed a comfortable victory over LESSA at
Rubens Street on Sunday. The recent rain was not enough to call the match
off and so the players were chivvied into action just about in time for the
2pm start. The Sunday side has a number of new faces since this
correspondent last made an appearance, however the good natured banter and
wide range of cricketing abilities has been maintained!

Golbey D, won the toss and despite the consternation of 'guesting' home
umpire Ro Pratap, chose to field. Jabba and Yash opened the bowling, with Mr
Abbott finding a good rhythm 'early doors' and picking up important early
wickets. A spurned hat trick chance left James with the commendable figures
of 8-4-13-3.

The skipper then turned to spin with Chris Wright and Tony McGill operating
in tandem, though with little luck. Despite good pressure LESSA started to
move the score on. At this point, Galvin A was brought into the attack and
with the weather looking gloomy decided to hurry things along, with an early
wicket, followed by a quick hat trick. Tony Jackson joined the wicket party
and the LESSA innings was wrapped up for just 128.

After an enjoyable tea, the response was forthright. Following a brief
agricultural cameo from Richard Black, Golbey D and Chris Levy built a solid
partnership of 78, before Chris tried to cut a ball off leg stump and was
bowled.

David Golbey moved serenely past fifty before getting bowled, however the
home cause was expedited by some lusty batting from Asam (14 of his 22 came
from one over) and Tony Jackson. All this saw the team home with plenty to
spare.
